B.C.A.A.S. MEETING MINUTES

November 8, 2007

Dave Brown called the meeting to order with 24 in attendance.  Some pictures of Comet 17P/Holmes were shown. An article about member Glen Hacker was in today’s Reading Eagle.  Mark and Janine Galiyano welcomed a new daughter in October. The wife of former member Bob Capone is ill with brain cancer. Our thoughts and best wishes go to the family. Dave noted that his neighbor had visited Lowell Observatory. When he mentioned that his neighbor had a telescope and was involved with observing the crash of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter, the college students recognized Dave and Dan Brown and BCAAS.

The next Night Sky Network teleconference will be December 6 at 9 pm. The speaker will be Dr. Chris McKay, who is a planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. His presentation will be “The Phoenix Mission and the Polar Regions of Earth and Mars”. Contact Barb Geigle for more information.

On Tuesday, November 13 at 7:30 pm, BCAAS members are invited to attend a joint meeting of the Berks Mineralogical Society and the Mengel Natural History Society. The speaker will be Dr. Stan Mertzman from F&M College, and he will be discussing Mars. The meeting will be held in the Reading Museum auditorium.

The Club has a balance of $$$$ plus the $$$$ CD. Linda noted that she will be sending in another order for calendars if anyone still wants one.

The floor was opened for nominations of officers for 2008.  The current officers were all nominated for the same positions; no other nominations were made. Nominations will be accepted at the December meeting before the election.

Our next meeting will be the annual holiday party on December 13. Everyone is invited to bring a covered dish to celebrate the season.

Dan Brown announced that a new planet has been found around the star 55 Cancri. It is the first extra-solar system known to have at least 5 planets.

Mark Galiyano presented some astrophotos he has taken with his new SBIG camera.

We had a very enjoyable and informative program on meteorites and tektites given by Bret Cadmus. He had a large selection of both on display.

  Respectfully submitted

Barbara Geigle, Secretary
